In an unprecedented incident, a woman was trapped inside a lift at the Titlagarh Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Bolangir before being safely rescued by the Odisha Fire Services team on Wednesday, averting a potential mishap.
According to official sources, the woman had entered the lift in one of the MCH buildings when the mechanism reportedly malfunctioned, causing her to become stuck mid-level.
Upon receiving the alert, personnel from the local fire station promptly arrived at the scene and forcibly opened the lift doors to bring the woman out unharmed.
The incident raised concerns among staff and visitors at the hospital, who gathered near the lift during the rescue. Firefighters used mechanical tools to pry open the jammed doors and were able to safely extricate the woman in a matter of minutes.
The fire department later confirmed that the rescue was completed swiftly and without incident. No injuries were reported.
Emergency Response Prevents Tragedy
Officials said that such incidents, though rare, highlight the urgent need for regular maintenance of lifts and other infrastructure within government hospitals. The fire department has urged authorities at the Titlagarh MCH to review safety protocols and conduct timely inspections to ensure operational readiness.
Similar Rescue Reported in Koraput
This incident comes close on the heels of another major rescue operation last week in Koraput, where over 15 people narrowly escaped drowning in the Indravati River after their overcrowded wooden boat tilted dangerously during a routine river crossing.
The passengers, who were from nearby villages in the Jaipur block, were crossing the river when the boat lost balance. Some fell into the water while others clung to the vessel. Alert villagers and passersby rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue using ropes and smaller boats.
No fatalities were reported, but the incident renewed attention on the lack of regulated safety measures at river ghats across monsoon-prone regions.
