A woman was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws for dowry in Kahneipura village under Khallikote police station limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Monday.
The victim, Arati Parida, was rescued in a half-burnt condition and admitted to hospital. She was later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for further treatment.
In-Laws Accused of Setting Her Ablaze
According to the victim’s family, Arati’s mother-in-law and brother-in-law poured petrol on her and set her on fire on Monday morning.
The woman was reportedly subjected to repeated dowry-related torture since her love marriage, around two years ago. It was alleged that on Sunday night, there was another altercation between the in-laws and Arati’s maternal family.
The incident, reportedly, took place earlier on Monday morning. With the help of some relatives and neighbours, the injured woman was rushed first to Khallikote CHC and then shifted to MKCG MCH in Berhampur.
As per the doctors, she has sustained 40% burn injuries, but her condition is currently reported to be stable.
Police Investigation Underway
The Khallikote police have launched an investigation into the incident and are probing all possible angles. They are also examining whether the victim was intentionally set ablaze or if she may have attempted to end her life following any family dispute.
As of now, no formal complaint has been lodged with the Khallikote police either by the victim or her maternal family. Police have stated that further action will be taken based on any official complaint.
