The Potato Mission during the previous government failed because seeds were supplied at the time of harvest. We will supply seeds to farmers by the first week of November, said Agriculture Minister KV Singh Deo on Saturday.

Coming down heavily on the previous BJD government, he said the seeds were distributed in January when potatoes are generally harvested resulting in the failure of the mission.

“The previous government had started Potato Mission which failed. It failed because seeds weren’t provided at the appropriate time. They were provided at the time of harvest. Our efforts are on to provide seeds to farmers by the first week of November. This government is trying to increase potato production in the state,” said the Minister.

‘The seeds will be procured from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. They will be distributed by the first week of November. Proposals have been given to people for the construction of hybrid cold storage in PPP mode. Many people have applied. Every sub-division will have cold storage. The department is contemplating how various vegetables can be kept at different temperatures in cold storage units. Discussions are also underway to keep the rent of cold storage affordable,” he said.

He also informed that a team under the leadership of the Director of the Horticulture department has been to West Bengal to review how the cold storages are performing there.
