Will Odisha politics witness more tremors in coming days? Such speculations are rife after BJP MP Sukanta Panigrahi’s statements indicated towards growing strength of the saffron brigade with the possibility of joining of several big leaders from other parties.

The BJP MP’s statements assume significance as Odisha has already witnessed several developments after two BJD sitting Rajya Sabha members- Mamata Mohanta and Sujit Kumar changing sides. The BJP MP further fuelled speculations by stating that in the last three months, several BJD leaders have joined the BJP.

“The way the pro-people government is working in Odisha, a lot of constructive leaders of various political parties, be it Congress or BJD, who want development of people and state, will try to join the BJP to take the development agenda further. Explosion is happening on a daily basis. Rajya Sabha MPs quitting a party and joining another is an explosion,” said Panigrahi.

The BJP MP further said that a lot of big leaders will join the BJP soon including several office bearers, former MLAs, and MLAs as they are in touch with us. Our membership drive is on and many leaders from various parties will resign and join our party, he added.

Responding to the statements of the BJP MP, senior BJD leader Debi Prasad Mishra said, “BJP leaders are also in touch. Those, who have ideological convictions, they will stay and others will swing. Everything is possible in politics. In Indian politics, it is clear that any unitary party, be it Congress or BJP, cannot capture power alone and they have to go for alliance. Such parties will have to depend on regional parties.”
