Wayanad Landslide: Sniffer dog from Odisha helping rescuers locate victims

Six days after the devastating landslide hit Wayanad, Kerala, search and rescue operations by Indian Army, NDRF, and other agencies continue. A sniffer dog named Storm from Odisha Police's K9 squad has joined the efforts to locate victims trapped under debris.

Even though six days have passed since the catastrophic landslide hit Kerala’s Wayanad hard, search operations by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, police and other agencies are still on for the missing ones. 

A sniffer dog from Odisha is also there extending its expertise to the rescue teams in tracing out victims trapped under debris and rubbles. 

On July 4, a sniffer dog of the Odisha Police K9 squad deployed with Berhampur police named Storm along with a team comprising one inspector, two sub-inspectors and a trainer of the K9 dog left for Kerala from Berhampur.

Storm, a German Shepherd, has been handpicked for the rescue operations because it is said to be the only dog of Odisha Police with expertise in search and rescue operations.

With the arrival of Storm, the hope of friends and relatives of missing persons has rekindled as they have been waiting to hear something about their near and dear ones. 

This canine expert from Odisha has already started performing the task assigned to it. Along with the other rescue teams, it is searching for the missing persons. 

On July 30, Wayanad woke up to one of the deadliest natural calamities as landslides triggered by heavy rainfall left a trail of death and destruction.
