The water level in Odisha's Subarnarekha river is rising due to heavy rainfall in neighbouring Jharkhand. Water released from the Galudih barrage has entered the river system, causing a steady increase in water levels. However, officials from the Water Resources Department have confirmed that there is currently no immediate threat of flooding.

As of 9 AM on Friday, the water level of the river stood at 8.0 metres. The warning level is marked at 9.45 metres, while the official danger level is set at 10.56 metres. The water level is expected to rise further following the continued release of water from Galudih barrage. At present, 2,42,000 cusecs of water is being released per second.

Although the upstream rainfall remains intense, there has been a decrease in rainfall in the downstream regions, prompting officials to state that the situation is under control for now. If the rainfall continues and more water is released than the current volume, there may be a possibility of low-lying areas such as Basta, Baliapal, and Bhogarai getting affected. However, authorities maintain that there is no flood threat at this moment.

The Water Resources Department added that there is no rainfall in the low-lying coastal areas and that the sea water level is not too high. As all the river water is flowing directly into the sea, a flood-like situation is unlikely. Officials have said a clearer picture will emerge by 6 PM today.

Meanwhile, in Sundargarh district, the Brahmani river water level is also rising due to continuous rainfall. The ongoing downpour has led to flood-like conditions in several riverside areas.

Panic has gripped residents of Lalei and Jangaladi villages, where people are staying in a constant state of fear. While rainfall in the downstream region has subsided, heavy rain in the upper catchment continues to push up the river level steadily.
