A large crocodile has been sighted in the Mahanadi river near Paradip, triggering panic among villagers residing along the riverbanks. The reptile was seen moving through the water in the vicinity of Chaumuhani, Balidia, Mushadiha, and Bhutmundai areas where local residents rely heavily on the river for their daily needs.
Villagers regularly use the Mahanadi for bathing, washing clothes, and other household chores. However, the sighting of a crocodile has raised serious concerns about safety, making everyday activities along the river fraught with risk.
According to locals, the crocodile is suspected to be a saltwater species, although forest officials have not confirmed this yet. Given the size and movement of the reptile, residents remain on edge, especially as the sightings have occurred close to inhabited stretches of the river.
So far, no incidents of harm or injury have been reported. However, the fear remains high as the crocodile continues to roam the river. With the Mahanadi playing a central role in the daily lives of these communities, the situation has left many anxious and in a state of constant vigilance.
