A recent gathering of former BJD stalwarts in Jajpur district has ignited fresh political speculation in Odisha. Dubbed a “friendly reunion”, the meeting may be laying the groundwork for a new political front, challenging both the BJD and BJP establishments.

According to sources, a discreet yet high-profile meeting of several veteran BJD leaders in Jajpur district has created a stir in the State’s political landscape, raising questions about potential new political alignments. The event, held under the pretext of a casual “friendship meeting”, is being closely watched amid talks of forming a new regional front.

The gathering was hosted by senior leader Pravat Tripathy and saw the presence of political heavyweights like Amar Satpathy, Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Prasanna Patasani, Rabi Pani, and Ramachandra Hansda. Also in attendance were young leaders Asit Patnaik from Bhadrak and Rabi Samal from Kendrapara.

Taking place at the historically significant Olasuni Gumpha (a cave) near Jajpur — a region once considered a stronghold of BJD — the meeting has intensified speculation over an emerging political front. Some believe it marks the beginning of a broader political realignment to challenge the dominance of BJD and BJP in the State.

Insiders suggest that dissatisfaction among veteran leaders, who once played a pivotal role in the BJD's formation, continues to simmer even after the party's fall from power. The leadership style of VK Pandian, said to maintain tight control over the party, is reportedly a key factor behind the unrest.

Rumours of health concerns surrounding party chief Naveen Patnaik and internal discord have only added fuel to the fire. Against this backdrop, the gathering of discontented leaders has raised the possibility of forming an alternative platform, possibly spearheaded by Pravat Tripathy and Amar Satpathy.

There is also talk that some influential figures in state politics may be backing this potential front from behind the scenes. While no formal announcement has been made, the political significance of such a meeting is undeniable, and speculation over its leadership and structure is gaining momentum.

“If a regional party does not play its role properly, others looking for another regional party is quite natural. What is there in it to be astonished? When questions are being raised now against those who claim to be regional parties, but are not raising a voice in the interest of Odisha, not even opposing the ruling party as an Opposition, what else will they look for?” former Khandapada MLA Soumya Patnaik questioned.
