Vedanta deploys AI, drones at its first greenfield coal project site at Odisha’s Jamkani

Vedanta Aluminium has initiated advanced technological measures at its Jamkani coal mine, located in Sundargarh district. The move comes owing to the importance of this site, the company's first greenfield coal project, which plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to Vedanta’s Jharsuguda aluminium smelter, one of the largest globally.

Notably, the mine's operations are pivotal for ensuring a steady coal supply to support the smelter's energy-intensive processes.

Integration of AI-Powered Drone Surveillance

According to reports from its X handle and press releases, Vedanta Aluminium has deployed an AI-powered drone-based surveillance system at the Jamkani mine. This system facilitates real-time aerial monitoring of a 500-meter blasting zone, automatically detecting the presence of humans, animals, and vehicles.

The drone provides live streaming capabilities and instant alerts in case of unauthorised access or anomalies, enabling swift corrective actions. Additionally, it supports two-way audio communication among officials, drone pilots, and blasting officers, improving coordination and operational efficiency.

Advanced Safety Measures and Operational Efficiency

Beyond drone surveillance, Vedanta Aluminium has implemented several digital safety technologies at Jamkani. These include a fatigue monitoring system that provides real-time alerts to drivers exhibiting signs of drowsiness or distraction, and a proximity-based collision avoidance system that detects blind spots and issues alerts to prevent accidents.

Furthermore, an AI-powered safety non-compliance detection system using smart CCTV has been introduced to flag real-time violations, reinforcing the company's commitment to a zero-harm work environment.

It is worth noting that Vedanta Aluminium's initiatives at the Jamkani coal mine align with the Mines Act, 1952, which mandates robust safety, health, and emergency response protocols.
