A student was killed while over 20 of his fellow mates sustained injuries after a pick-up van they were travelling in overturned near Athagarh area in Cuttack district on Sunday. As per initial reports, the students of Malaviharapur High School were on their way to the parade ground near Ansupa Lake when the vehicle carrying them overturned.
The accident has raised concerns over students’ safety when they are being taken for attending several events on behalf of the school.
Following the road mishap, all the injured students were first taken to Athagarh Hospital, where they received necessary medical attention. Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the accident's cause, ensuring all possible measures are taken to support the affected families.
Dr. Bijay Mishra said, “Around 23 students were brought to Athagarh hospital and later nine students were shifted to Cuttack. We are getting information regarding the death of one student.”
Local guardians alleged that the school authorities had asked the students to attend the Republic Day parade.
“The teachers had hired a pickup van to transport the students. Due to the negligence of the school authorities, such an incident happened. Under no circumstances, students should have been allowed in an open vehicle,” alleged a guardian.
The deceased was a Class 10 student, informed Cuttack Collector adding that around 23 students were travelling by the pickup van to the parade ground. A total of nine students are currently undergoing treatment at SCB in Cuttack.
The Collector further informed that a compensation of Rs 25,000 will be provided to the family of the deceased student from the Red Cross fund. A probe will be conducted as there was no permission to take the students to another school.
