Amidst huge hue and cry surrounding the unseasonal Rath Yatra organised by ISKCON’s Houston unit in the USA, Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb has written letters to the chairman of the governing body commission, ISKCON Mayapuri and the president of ISKCON temple, Houston, asking them to cancel the Rath Yatra scheduled to be held on November 9.

In his letter, the Puri king said the Rath Yatra is organised as per the tithis sanctioned by scriptures and tradition, that is, from the 2nd day (dwitiya) of the bright fortnight (shukla-paksha) of the month of Ashadha to the 12th (dwadashi) or 13th (trayodashi) day of the bright fortnight (shukla-paksha) of the month of Ashadha.

He also mentioned that several rounds of discussion were held with ISKCON earlier on holding Rath Yatra as per the traditions followed in Srimandir.

Drawing a parallel between Janmasthami and Rath Yatra, he in his letter said the festivals of Lord Jagannath, like those of Lord Krishna, must be celebrated uniformly throughout the world (and not only in India) in accordance with scriptures and tradition.
