Two women were detained late on Tuesday night for allegedly attempting to steal a newborn baby from the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital.
According to sources, the incident occurred around 2:30 am when the women reportedly tried to snatch the infant from her mother’s arms.
The newborn girl was born 10 days ago to Satyabrata Das from the Aruhabruti area under Bhogarai block in Balasore district, sources added.
Baby Stealing Attempt Bid
The two women allegedly entered the maternity ward in the dead of night and tried to abduct the baby. However, locals noticed suspicious activity and managed to catch one of the women as she fell while fleeing. The second woman was also nabbed shortly thereafter.
Following the incident, the local people immediately informed the Town Police Station, who arrived at the scene and took both women into custody for questioning. The police have launched an investigation into the matter.
Not The First Instance
Notably, this is not the first such incident at the hospital — there have been at least two reported baby theft cases at the same facility last year. Despite these serious incidents, hospital authorities and police officials have yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest case.
The accused women have reportedly denied involvement in any child theft racket, but further investigation is ongoing to determine whether they are connected to previous incidents.
"Two women attempted to steal my baby around 2 a.m. When my wife screamed, I woke up and saw the two women running away. Later, we managed to catch both of them—one of whom is from Kharagpur," said Satyabrata Das, father of the newborn.
"I hail from Kharagpur. I came to the hospital to see my granddaughter. The allegation against me is completely baseless," said the detained woman.
However, no comments from the police or the hospital authorities could be obtained over the matter.
