A recreational outing turned tragic when two medical students from Burla-based Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) lost their lives after getting swept away at the famous Debjharan Waterfall.

The incident occurred when the students, along with their friends, had gone to the popular waterfall, located in the Jujumura block of Sambalpur district.

According to initial reports, a group of six college students had visited the popular tourist destination earlier today. During their time at the falls, one male and one female student accidentally slipped into the water under unknown circumstances and were swept away by the current.

Both students were rescued in a severely critical condition, and immediate efforts were made to provide medical attention. However, the two breathed their last during treatment, sources said. Their identities have not yet been officially disclosed.

Upon receiving information, the Superintendent and Dean of Burla Medical College rushed to the spot and are closely monitoring the situation. Rescue and relief operations were swiftly launched at the site, and further details are awaited.

Local authorities have urged tourists to exercise caution when visiting natural sites during the monsoon, especially in areas prone to strong currents and slippery surfaces.
