Two ITI students died while immersing the idol of Lord Vishwakarma in the Kathpal check dam under Betanati Police Station in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday.

The deceased students were identified as Thakur Soren from Badampahad and Bhagya Prakash Patra from Tato village in Karanjia block. As per reports, they were part of a group that had gone to immerse the Lord Vishwakarma idol.

Both students were residing in a hostel and had gone to the canal for the immersion that morning when the tragic incident occurred. Soon after, locals informed the Fire Services Department.

Fire personnel arrived at the scene and launched a rescue operation, eventually recovering the bodies after a four-hour search.

According to the allegations of locals, the college authorities and other students who were part of the procession had left the spot after the two students slipped into the dam.

Meanwhile, the Baripada Tehsildar has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Notably, last Friday, four students were swept away during Ganesh idol immersion in the Laxmiposi area of Baripada Tehsil. While locals alerted fire services and two were rescued, the bodies of the other two were recovered after an extended search operation.
