In a narrow escape at sea, a fishing trawler sank while returning from a Hilsa fishing trip, but all 16 fishermen onboard were safely rescued. The incident occurred in the deep sea on Sunday, after the trawler had set out from Namkhana ferry ghat in West Bengal on Friday in search of Hilsa fish.

According to the fishermen’s association, the vessel developed leaks during its return journey on Sunday, allowing seawater to enter. Due to persistent rainfall over recent days, the sea had turned rough, contributing to the sinking. This period, being the peak season for Hilsa fishing, sees heightened activity in the area.

Fishermen aboard a nearby trawler witnessed the incident as it unfolded. Acting swiftly, they launched a rescue effort and managed to save all the fishermen from the sinking vessel. The rescued fishermen were brought into the assisting trawler without delay.

All the fishermen are reported to be in stable health following the rescue. Sources confirm that they did not sustain serious injuries. Though the vessel could not be salvaged, the timely intervention of fellow fishermen helped avert a major tragedy.

While no casualties were reported, the incident raises concerns over the condition of fishing trawlers operating in challenging weather and sea conditions during peak fishing seasons.
