Train operations came to a grinding halt for nearly six hours on Friday after large stones fell onto the railway track near Majhigariani temple in Rayagada district, causing major disruption to rail traffic in the region.

The incident occurred early in the day, bringing all train movements on the route to a standstill. Railway sources said the boulders had rolled down and settled on the track, making it unsafe for operations. Passengers were left stranded on trains and at stations as emergency teams rushed to the spot to assess the situation.

According to sources, the incident took place when the Korba Express was entering Rayagada. The train reportedly dragged the boulder for around a kilometer before halting permanently. The track has been damaged and will be replaced.

After a prolonged clearance operation by railway personnel, the stones were removed, and limited train movement resumed on one line. However, services continue to remain partially affected as damage to the track has been suspected.

Repair and maintenance work is underway, and railway officials have assured that efforts are being made to fully restore normalcy at the earliest.

No official statement has yet been issued on the cause of the incident. Authorities are also investigating whether recent rains may have triggered the rockfall.
