The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow warning for multiple districts in the state, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and isolated heavy rainfall till 3rd May.
The alert comes as part of a larger weather disturbance affecting eastern and central India, including Odisha, under the influence of multiple cyclonic circulations.
As of 1st May afternoon, a yellow warning has been issued for parts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, and Nuapada, valid for this evening. The forecast warned that these areas are likely to experience light to moderate thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (30–40 kmph), lightning, and light to moderate rainfall.
The IMD warned residents to stay indoors, avoid sheltering under trees, and unplug electrical appliances to guard against lightning strikes. People living in kutcha homes or vulnerable structures are advised to be particularly cautious and ready to move to safer locations.
Heavy Rain and Hail Likely on 2–3 May
Looking ahead, the IMD forecasts thundersqualls with gusts up to 70 kmph, lightning, and isolated hailstorms over Odisha on 2nd and 3rd May. Heavy rain is also likely in some pockets, raising concerns about flash floods, crop damage, and disruption to power lines and transport.
For May 3, predictions stated the possibility of fairly widespread rainfall covering all districts of Odisha, as per the weather report shared by the Bhubaneswar Centre of the IMD.

Temperature Trends and Relief from Heat
Unlike north and western India, which are under heatwave alerts, Odisha has reported markedly below-normal maximum temperatures, especially in interior districts. However, this cool spell is accompanied by atmospheric instability, increasing the risk of localised extreme weather events.
