Growing Revenue from Tobacco Products:
The state has witnessed a steady annual rise in tax collection from the pan masala and gutkha products.
In the financial year 2024-25 alone, Rs 1,047 crore has been collected. Odisha receives supplies of pan masala, gutkha, and tobacco from 16 different states across India.
High Revenue Means High Consumption:
The increasing revenue highlights the high consumption of these products in the state, raising concerns over public health despite the economic benefits. The government is expected to balance revenue generation with regulatory measures to curb tobacco consumption and its associated health risks.
Harmful Effects of Gutkha and Tobacco Consumption:
The consumption of gutkha and tobacco poses severe health risks, affecting millions of people worldwide. These products contain carcinogenic substances that increase the risk of oral, throat, and lung cancer. Prolonged use leads to addiction, causing severe damage to the gums, teeth, and overall oral hygiene.
Additionally, tobacco consumption contributes to cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and respiratory issues.
