A school van carrying over 15 students got stranded on the Shalania–Chasakhanda road for nearly two hours in the Anandapur block of Keonjhar district owing to poor road conditions, which locals blamed was a result of illegal sand trafficking.
According to reports, the students from five surrounding villages, including Aitipur, Chasakhanda, and Sahapur, accompanied by their teachers, were stuck as their vehicle could not move due to the severely damaged road surface. Further, the teachers and students, in complete school uniform, were seen trying to push and pull the van, but in vain.
Tractor Assists In Rescue Operation
Sources reported that after nearly two hours of being stuck, local residents hired a tractor to tow the school van out of the damaged stretch.
Once freed, the students were able to continue their journey home safely. Locals also stated that multiple panchayats in the region depend on this road for daily transport, making the continued damage a recurring problem that urgently needs the intervention of the government.
Road Conditions Deteriorated By Heavy Vehicles
Local sources report that the Shalania–Chasakhanda road has suffered extensive damage due to heavy traffic, particularly from 10 and 12-wheel trucks transporting sand.
Despite the Keonjhar district administration prohibiting sand transport during the rainy season, the sand mafia continues to flout the rules, leaving the road in a deplorable state, said locals. The compromised road not only obstructed the school van but also prevented ambulances and passenger buses from passing safely, they added.
Authorities Urged To Enforce Regulations
The incident has drawn attention to the urgent need for strict enforcement against illegal sand transport in the district. Parents and residents called for immediate repairs and stricter monitoring to prevent similar disruptions, particularly during the rainy season when roads are more vulnerable.
