In a significant move aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of students, particularly girls, the Odisha government is actively considering the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems across all government and private schools in the state, similar to those implemented in CBSE-affiliated institutions.
School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond on Wednesday confirmed the development, stating that the Odisha government is exploring comprehensive steps to strengthen child protection mechanisms on school campuses.
“In the coming days, CCTV cameras will be installed in schools and classrooms. The Department is discussing this and related plans for immediate implementation,” Gond said.
Mandatory ICC Committees In Schools
Alongside the CCTV initiative, the government has directed the formation of Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) in all schools to address cases of sexual harassment or gender-based discrimination, in line with the provisions of the POSH Act (Prevention of Sexual Harassment).
The Minister noted that instructions have already been issued for setting up these committees and ensuring they are functional. Immediate steps are being taken to train members of these committees so they can operate effectively and sensitively in addressing complaints from students.
Focus On Women And Child Safety
Highlighting the broader policy vision, Minister Gond said the state is prioritising the safety and empowerment of women and children within the education system.
"The safety and security of women and children are of paramount importance. Helpline numbers have been generated so that any grievances and complaints can be lodged with ease. As soon as their complaint is lodged, it will be viewed very seriously,” he said.
The Minister also said that a final decision will be taken after inter-departmental consultations and approval from the state cabinet. Once implemented, Odisha would join a growing list of states taking proactive digital and legal measures to make school campuses safer.
