After tightening restrictions for vehicles used for picnicking, the Odisha State Transport Department has brought new guidelines for school buses in view of the safety of students.
The guidelines are aimed at enhancing the safety and overall standards of school buses used for carrying students in the state.
As per the guidelines, the word "School Bus" should be written prominently on both front and rear. It is also mandated that each bus should be equipped with a fire extinguisher and a first aid facility.
Moreover, iron enclosures should be put up around the windows while the maximum speed limit for the buses should be within 50 km/h.
It is also mandated that the names and contact numbers of the schools should be displayed on the buses while the doors must be securely locked during transit.
Besides, the bus drivers are required to carry valid driving licenses and should have at least 5 years of experience in driving heavy vehicles.
Uniforms have been made mandatory for both drivers and conductors while on duty.
There should be space between seats for school bags while the vehicles should obtain fitness certificates, and have route charts displayed inside.
Bhubaneswar Regional Transport Officer-2, Sanat Jena, said that almost all school buses are following the guidelines. "When we are checking the buses, we have to check these guidelines. Every month, we carry out special drives. Buses not adhering to the guidelines are fined and seized."
