Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to visit AIIMS Bhubaneswar to assess the condition of the girl student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore, who attempted self-immolation on Saturday.
The Chief Minister will interact with doctors treating the critically injured student and also speak to her family during the visit, informed Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Sunday.
Government Steps In With On-Ground Monitoring
The visit follows intense public scrutiny and a statewide outcry over the circumstances that led to the student’s drastic act.
According to Health Minister Mahaling, “A team of all the specialist doctors at AIIMS is engaged in treating the victim. All efforts are being made to save the girl. The AIIMS specialist team continues treatment using every possible facility.”
The Health Minister arrived at AIIMS Bhubaneswar this morning along with Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and MLA Babu Singh. They met with the family of the victim and assured them of all necessary support from the state government.
Victim Remains Critical
Meanwhile, the student remains on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after suffering between 90–95% burn injuries. Her internal organs, including her kidneys and respiratory system, have been severely affected, making her condition extremely precarious.
AIIMS Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas earlier confirmed that while a 12-member team is monitoring her, the next 24-48 hours remain vital. Given the severity of her injuries, airlifting has been ruled out.
AIIMS Forms 8-Member Expert Panel for Daily Oversight
In a new development, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has constituted a dedicated eight-member committee comprising senior doctors from critical care, surgery, nephrology, pulmonology, and anaesthesiology.
The panel has been tasked with closely monitoring the patient’s health round-the-clock and ensuring coordination across departments for seamless intervention.
High-Level Government Probe Running Parallel
Alongside the medical response, the Odisha government has launched a parallel high-level investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
A three-member inquiry committee headed by senior officials of the Higher Education Department is currently examining five critical dimensions, including institutional response, accountability, and procedural lapses.
Both the college principal, Dillip Ghosh, and Education HOD Sameer Kumar Sahoo, have been suspended. Sahoo was arrested yesterday and remains in police custody amid allegations of prolonged mental harassment and institutional intimidation.
