Panic gripped the residents of Raghunathpur panchayat under Sinla police limits in Balasore district as a troop of more than 20 monkeys unleashed a terror and left more than 50 injured in the region.

According to sources, a troop of more than 20 monkeys are attacking the residents of Sanaasti, Kunkudi, Mathakankudi and Palasahi villages under Raghunathpur panchayat.

As many as 50 persons have been injured in the monkey troop, sources informed, adding that at least 10 people are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the districts after sustaining serious injuries in the monkey attack.

As per the villagers, there are few 'mad' monkeys in troop who are unleashing terror in the villages and leaving the locals injured by attacking them.

“The monkey troop attacked my husband at around 7 pm while he was returning from the market. The monkeys have also bitten him. He was first rushed to Basta hospital and later shifted to Balasore and then Cuttack as his condition deteriorated. The monkey menace has forced us to remain indoors,” said a villager.

On being informed about the monkey menace, the Forest department officials have reached the panchayat and efforts are on to drive away to monkey troop.
