In a major development, Shovana Mohanty has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Women on Tuesday. Along with her, four other members have been inducted into the Commission as members, and they are Prativa Satpathy, Urmila Mahapatra, Kalpana Mallick, and Mukta Sahu.
The announcement has been made in a notification issued by the Department of Women and Child Development of the Odisha government today.
"In pursuance of Section-3(1) and Section-3(2) (b) of the Odisha State Commission for Women Act, 1993, the State Government has been pleased to appoint Smt. Shovana Mohanty At-Karanjia, Remuna, Dist-Balasore as Chairperson, Odisha State Commission for Women, Bhubaneswar. The Chairperson, State Commission for Women shall exercise the powers conferred and perform the functions assigned under the Act. The Chairperson shall hold office for a period not exceeding three years from the date of issue of this Notification. The salaries and allowances payable and the other terms and conditions of the service of the Chairperson shall be such as may be prescribed by the Government from time to time," read the notification.
In her response, Shovana Mohanty said she would work to ensure justice for women, adding that the State Government is giving top priority to the issue. Referring to the Balasore incident, she noted that strict action has already been taken and assured that similar stringent measures will be adopted in the future to safeguard women’s rights. She also warned that any misconduct against women will invite stern legal action and said she will work on measures to prevent such incidents.

"Justice should reach every woman. Women are neglected, and they are not aware of justice. I will work to ensure justice for women and make them aware of it," said Mohanty.
Meanwhile, Babita Patra has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR) for a term of three years. As many as six members have also been appointed to the Commission, and they are Sukeshi Oram, Kalpana Lenka, Chandana Das, Kasturi Mishra, Mansmita Khuntia, and Sujata Nayak.
