Odisha government has launched a comprehensive initiative- Shaktishree for ensuring the safety and security of women students and staff across all higher education campuses in the state.
In the wake of the death of a 20-year-old student by self-immolation over an alleged sexual harassment incident at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, the announcement was made.
• As part of the initiative, Shaktishree Empowerment Cells will be set up across 16 state universities and 730 government and aided colleges in the state to ensure the safety of girl students.
• A girl student as Shaktishree Sathi and a woman lecturer as Shaktishree coordinator will work in each Empowerment Cell . Furthermore, the Collector will appoint five 'Shakti Associates' to support the initiative.
• An intensive six-day training session for participants is also planned where training about self defence and mental health will be provided.

• Shaktishree Mobile Application, operational around the clock, will be introduced to ensure safety and security of the girl students on campus.
• The app incorporates an emergency SOS button to facilitate immediate conversation and assistance from Shaktishree Sathi and Shaktishree coordinator.
• Self defence training camps and safety and women's rights related camps will be organised twice in a year through SAFE campaigns.
• An annual safety report for each campus must be submitted by 31 December.
• Surveillance cameras will be installed on campuses which will be monitored by a special control room on a 24/7 basis.
• Online courses about POSH Act 2013 and UGC guidelines in this regard will be provided to the students.
• An annual 'Shakti Swaroopini' workshop will be organised to raise awareness about women's legal rights.
