A sea bath turned disturbing on Sonapur beach in Ganjam district, on Sunday, when a youth went missing while bathing in the sea, and another was rescued in time. The incident occurred when four youths from Chikiti area had gone to the beach for a bath.

According to police sources, Amit Kumar Pradhan (18) and Sipu Pradhan (19), both from Liakhai village under Chikiti K Nuagaon police limits, entered the sea to bathe while their two other friends — Rajesh Kumar Pradhan (19) and Dipu Pradhan (19) — stayed ashore.
The mishap struck when Amit and Sipu began struggling in the seawater. However, Sipu was rescued and brought back to the shore safely, but Amit was swept away and still remains untraced.
As soon as the incident was reported, Sonapur Marine Police reached the spot and assisted others in the rescue of Sipu. A fire services team from Chikiti also rushed to the beach and launched a frantic search operation for missing Amit, which was underway till the time when this report was filed.
Locals and officials are increasingly concerned about the safety arrangements and absence of lifeguards in this popular yet risky beach stretch.
No comments were received from police or the missing youth’s family in this regard.
Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, a student had gone missing after being swept away while bathing in the sea along with his friends near Paradip lighthouse on June 7. The youth was identified as Sheikh Aman, who was a student of a college in Kendrapara.
Aman, along with his six classmates, was on a recreational visit to Paradip town. He had encountered the unfortunate incident while bathing with his friends in the sea.
