As many as 69 sanitation workers working under Kabisuryanagar NAC in Ganjam district have been staging a protest over alleged non-payment of salaries for four months.

Forced to work without salary, these sanitation workers have resorted to demonstrations, ceasing all cleaning operations in the area to draw attention to their plight.

According to the sanitation workers’ union, while the district administration has reportedly processed the salary bills, the payments have been stalled by the contractor responsible for wage distribution. The workers have accused the local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of being involved in delaying the release of the funds to the contractor.

The workers have vowed to continue their protest until they receive their dues. Attempts to contact the MLA and administrative officials for a comment have so far been unsuccessful.

“We came to know from the accountant that release of our salary has been delayed by the local MLA. We are working very hard. Why we will not get our salary on time? We are finding it difficult to run our family. Our salary should be released immediately,” said Kabisuryanagar Sanitation Workers’ Association president Prasanna Nayak.

“We have not got our salary for the last four months. We don’t know the exact reason why our salary has been held. We will continue our protest until our salaries are released,” said Deepak Nayak, another protestor.
