Odisha Director General of Police, Sunil Bansal, who visited the violence-hit Sambalpur district on Saturday to review the situation, assured stringent action against those found involved.

Addressing the media after reviewing the situation with Sambalpur SP, Bansal said the curfew will remain in force in the district as a precautionary measure.

“I have reviewed the situation with the IG and Sambalpur SP. Immediate action has been taken to restore peace in the district after the untoward incident which was reported yesterday. All necessary action has been taken to enforce the curfew. Additional forces have also been mobilized to maintain law and order in the area,” Bansal said.

“We are hopeful that peace will be restored soon. But the curfew will remain in force as a precautionary measure. Stringent action will be taken against the people involved in violence,” the DGP added.

“A relaxation of two hours each in the morning and evening will be there so that the general public does not suffer. I appeal to everyone to cooperate with the police and administration. I hope the situation will be normalised in a day or two,” the top cop said.

Asked about if any action will be taken against intelligence failure, Bansal said, “We are primarily focusing on restoring peace. The law will take its own course and necessary action will be taken.”

DGP Bansal along with ADGP-Law and Order, RK Sharma; Intelligence chief, Sanjeeb Panda visited Sambalpur to take stock of the situation today.

Meanwhile, 49 persons have been arrested in connection with incidents of violence in Sambalpur. While 26 were arrested for stone pelting during bike rally, 23 others were arrested for ransacking & arson during yesterday's rallies, informed Sambalpur SP, B Gangadhar.
