In the wake of a fatal road accident in Kantapali under Sambalpur district, the driver alleged to be responsible for the deaths of two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders has been remanded into police custody.

Prasanna Jenamani, whose changing narratives have raised suspicions, will be held for three days as police seek to uncover the truth. The court of Judicial Magistrate of First Class (JMFC) authorised a three-day custody period, following an initial request for seven days by Burla police.

Law enforcement agencies are delving into the potential motives behind the incident. Key questions include whether the driver acted independently or if others were involved. There are also concerns that the BJP leaders may have been targeted due to their opposition to illegal fly ash shipments or other reasons yet to be clarified.

Earlier on Monday, the police confirmed that a dumper had "intentionally" hit the vehicle of two BJP leaders in Odisha's Sambalpur district.

The two BJP leaders, identified as BJP's Goshala mandal president Debendra Nayak and ex-sarpanch Muralidhar Chhuria, were killed after the dumper hit their car in the early hours of Sunday.

The incident happened around 1.30 am on NH 53 in the Burla police station area. There were six people in the car, including the driver, and they were returning home in Kardola from Bhubaneswar, police said.

"The video footage of the incident we have collected shows that the dumper intentionally hit the car. So, we have registered a case under Sections 307 and 302 of BNS. We are collecting other scientific evidence," Superintendent of Police, P Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo told media persons in Sambalpur.
