Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Odisha has sparked conversations, but not about politics or policies. What caught the public eye this time was his choice of attire, which bore a striking resemblance to what he had worn during a public rally in Chandikhol on March 5, 2024.
Wearing the same crisp white kurta and a distinctive check-pattern jacket, Modi presented a near-identical look to the one he sported during his last major Odisha visit. The colour combination, fabric pattern, and overall styling were unmistakably similar. Visual comparisons of both events have now surfaced online, drawing attention to the repetition.
While Prime Minister Modi is often noted for his unique and symbolic wardrobe choices, the decision to re-wear an outfit from a previous Odisha visit has led to speculation and discussion among political observers and the public alike.
Many are interpreting it as a subtle signal—perhaps of continuity, connection, or a calculated gesture toward the people of the state.
Adding to the intrigue, during his Chandikhol appearance in March last year, Modi had shared the stage with the then Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Fast forward to now, the political landscape has shifted—Naveen is no longer in power, and the BJP has established a new leadership in Odisha, with Mohan Charan Majhi stepping in as the new Chief Minister.
The visual continuity in Modi’s outfit, juxtaposed with the political change in Odisha, has added layers of symbolism for many. While the jacket may be the same, the context—and the leadership in the state—has changed.
As discussions around symbolism in politics continue, the Prime Minister’s wardrobe has once again become a talking point, subtly reflecting deeper shifts in the political narrative of Odisha.
Was it a coincide or intentional, it has now sparked a debate.
State BJP vice-president, Biranchi Tripathy said, “PM Modi has immense love for Odisha and Lord Jagannath. Everybody knows it very well. He had visited Odisha frequently ahead of the last elections and post elections, he has visited six times to the state. He is the only Prime Minister to do so.”
Tripathy further said that Prime Minister always try to ensure how Odisha will see development.
“US President Doland Trump invited PM Modi, but he had prior engagement and wanted to be here in Odisha, the land of Lord Jagannath. The discussion in media regarding his wardrobe, shows his simplicity or it can be a coincidence. He has worn several attires during Odisha visit in the past. When he had visited Chandikhol before the election for campaign and his visit after formation of government, might be a coincidence when he came to give report card. But it is clear that PM Modi has tremendous love and faith for Lord Jagannath,” he added.
