The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that the deep depression, previously active over the Bay of Bengal, has now weakened into a depression and is currently hovering over Bangladesh. However, it continues to have a significant impact on the weather in Odisha, with the threat of thunderstorms and rainfall looming large.
According to the latest weather reports, the system continues to exert significant influence over eastern and north-eastern Odisha and is expected to trigger heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued a red alert in this regard for the northern districts of the state.
While the most intense downpours, some exceeding 20 cm, are forecasted for areas in the northeast, parts of Odisha are already witnessing the early impacts of the system, as associated cloud bands and moisture-laden winds sweep across the state.
Orange Alert for Western Odisha: Thunderstorms, Lightning Likely
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Bargarh districts, warning of moderate thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (40–50 kmph) and lightning. These conditions are expected to develop within a span of three hours from the issuance of the alert.
Residents in these districts have been advised to remain indoors, avoid open spaces during lightning, and secure loose outdoor objects. The weather office has also cautioned that minor damage to banana plantations, standing crops, and vulnerable structures is possible due to the sudden weather activity.

Red Alert in Northeast India; Odisha Monsoon Onset Confirmed
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has made an early entry into southern Odisha, as confirmed by the IMD.
The advance, which typically occurs around the second week of June, has arrived ahead of schedule, following a similar early onset over Kerala this year. Monsoon winds are expected to progress further into central and northern Odisha within the next two to three days.
