In protest against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, doctors at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack have staged protests by stopping their work.

In a powerful display of solidarity, more than 3,000 Junior Resident doctors, House Surgeons and UG Medical students have joined the protest by hitting the streets and shouting slogans demanding justice for the victim.

As per reports, junior doctors stopped all kinds of services except emergency services. OPD, OT and laboratory services have also been stopped and as a result, patients at the hospital are facing severe problems.

The protesting doctors have demanded immediate investigation into the incident, justice to the victim and safety and security for doctors and health workers across the country.

“The matter has not been confined to West Bengal only; rather it has now spread across the country. Doctors are working so hard to provide service to the patients. The brutal murder of a doctor has affected all the doctors. We demand that a Central Protection Act should be enacted for the doctors. The victim should get immediate justice and all the doctors across the country should be provided proper safety and security,” said a protesting doctor.

“We have stopped the elected services. If our demands are not met within 72 hours, we will be forced to stop the emergency services as well,” he added

Earlier, doctors of SCB Medical College and Hospital had staged protests by wearing black badges.
