Nor'wester triggered rainfall, thunderstorms expected to persist across Odisha till April 25

Bhubaneswar Regional Centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued thunderstorms accompanied by rain and strong winds across Odisha until April 25 under the influence of Nor'wester.

A yellow weather warning has been reportedly issued for 13 districts within the state due to anticipated severe conditions.

Areas to be affected

Some places in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and Gajapati are expected to receive heavy rain, particularly during the afternoon or evening during the period. Wind speeds in these areas may reach between 40 to 50 kilometres per hour.

In addition, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nuapada may also experience thunderstorms, with winds blowing at 30 to 40 kilometres per hour.

Increased rainfall 

Odisha has experienced a significant increase in rainfall due to the Nor'wester phenomenon. Since March, the state has recorded an average rainfall of 60.5 millimetres, exceeding the usual 38.9 millimetres, marking a 55% rise in precipitation.

IMD has further predicted that the southern parts of Odisha will continue to encounter the effects of Nor'wester in the coming days. However, temperatures are predicted to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius after three days.
