Huge quantities of tobacco products, including gutka and khaini, razor blades, and cash were recovered following massive raids on several jails in Nayagarh district in the wee hours of Sunday. Moreover, over Rs 13,000 cash was also seized during the raids today.
Sources said the raids were conducted on Nayagarh Circle jail and three other sub-jails. The raids were conducted by senior officials of Nayagarh police.
As per reports, the raids were conducted following allegations of illegal narcotics use and trade from the jail. The seizure of such substances from the jails has now raised suspicion about the security measures and role of jail officials. This raises serious questions on the nexus between the criminals and jail authorities or serious security lapses in the system.
On August 23, a surprise raid was conducted on Bolangir jail which was in the news following a clash between two criminal groups. Several contraband items were seized, including bidis, cigarettes, lighters, trimmers, and some food items, which are restricted as per the jail manual.
