According to official sources, in a landmark announcement, the Chief Minister declared that Puri Municipality will be elevated to a Municipal Corporation, making it the sixth municipal corporation in the state of Odisha.

This significant announcement was made during a press briefing, where the CM highlighted the urgent need for a modern administrative structure to accommodate the town's rapid growth and importance as a religious and tourist hub.

Citing the rising population and the steady influx of pilgrims to the town-home to the world-famous Jagannath Temple-Majhi said that urban restructuring is now essential. The town’s transformation aims to improve infrastructure, governance, and service delivery to meet future demands.

The CM also revealed that ten nearby panchayats will be merged into the town as part of the expansion process. These panchayats will be integrated into Puri’s urban framework, allowing for better coordination and development planning.

The process to convert Puri Municipality into a Municipal Corporation will begin tomorrow, according to the CM, setting the stage for comprehensive administrative changes.

“As chief ‘Sevak’ of the State, several key responsibilities were assigned to me by the people of Odisha. Providing qualitative and basic amenities to the local residents along with lakhs of devotees coming to Puri is my prime duty,” the CM stated in the presser.

“What I have personally felt earlier, keeping in mind the hopes and aspirations of residents and devotees in Puri, they have been deprived of modern amenities. Hence, it seems, to achieve this goal, the existing Puri Municipality and local self-government bodies need to undergo a major transformation,” the CM expressed while briefing mediapersons.
