The shocking incident of a minor girl allegedly set ablaze by unidentified assailants in Puri’s Bayabar area has taken a grim turn, with doctors confirming that the 16-year-old has suffered 70% burn injuries, primarily on her upper body, and her condition remains critical, stated reports.
Following initial treatment at Pipilil, the victim has now been shifted to the Burn Unit of AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s Trauma Centre, where a specialist medical team has begun her treatment. The transfer was personally ordered by Deputy Chief Minister Parvati Parida, who has assured that the Odisha government will bear all medical expenses.
Deputy CM Orders Probe, Promises Justice
Reacting swiftly to the brutality of the case, Deputy CM Parida condemned the incident and promised uncompromising action against the culprits. She has assured that the government will ensure justice is served, while also indicating plans to visit the hospital for a personal assessment of the victim’s condition.
How The Incident Occurred
The girl was reportedly on her way to her friend’s house around 8:30 am on Saturday when she was intercepted by three men on a deserted stretch near the Bhargavi River, lifted forcefully, and set on fire. Her cries for help drew the attention of local residents, who rushed to douse the flames and took her to the nearest hospital.
Attack Sparks Political Firestorm
As police continue their hunt for the unidentified attackers, the case has also triggered a wave of political reactions.
Senior BJD leader Rudra Maharathi has openly criticised the state government, saying, “After how many such incidents will the government wake up?”
He demanded swift and exemplary punishment, adding that the fear of the law is eroding, and urged the administration to restore public confidence through urgent and visible action.
No Arrests Yet, Investigation Intensifies
Despite the attack happening just 1.5 km from the Balanga police station, no arrests have been made as yet.
“We have formed a special team. We are working on multiple leads, and the investigation is being closely monitored at the state level,” informed Puri SP Pinak Mishra.
