In a unique celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, Balanga Patna village in Puri district carried out idol immersion processions on beautifully decorated bullock carts, setting an example for the rest of Odisha.

The Ganesh idols, embellished with gold and silver ornaments, were taken on carts adorned with thatch and the world-renowned Pipili appliqué work. The vibrant processions were accompanied by devotional songs, adding to the festive spirit.

The initiative, led by enthusiastic local youth, sought to revive traditional practices while promoting cultural roots. Organisers said the move was also aimed at curbing the disruptions and noise pollution that often accompany modern, high-decibel celebrations.

The eco-friendly and heritage-driven approach has drawn attention across the state, offering a model of celebration that blends devotion with sustainability.

Sound In Moderation

While the bullock carts did feature a sound system, the volume was reportedly far lower than the modified DJ vehicles that have caused considerable problems for residents, hospital patients, and the elderly in recent years.

The youth-led effort has been praised for striking a balance between festivity and public convenience, demonstrating a way to celebrate responsibly without disturbing the community.

DJ Vehicles Under Scrutiny

In contrast, Balasore police recently seized over 20 DJ vehicles during Ganesh idol immersions, citing excessive noise and disruptions near key areas, including the District Headquarters Hospital in Motiganj.

Following such incidents, the Odisha State Transport Authority (STA) recently issued circular prohibiting unauthorised structural modifications, particularly on vehicles converted into DJ or OJ setups.

The STA directed all Regional Transport Officers to take action against violations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Vehicles exceeding permissible limits of size, fitted with non-approved lights, or producing high-intensity sound face penalties, seizure, and cancellation of registration and fitness certificates.

Officials noted that such vehicles impair manoeuvrability, visibility, and safety, highlighting the importance of adhering to approved standards during festivals.

A Model For Responsible Celebration

The bullock cart immersion in Balanga Patna now serves as an example of how traditional celebration can be vibrant yet considerate, preserving both cultural heritage and public well-being.
