A major financial scandal has rocked the Korukonda area of Malkangiri district, where a branch manager of Punjab National Bank (PNB) has been accused of embezzling lakhs of rupees meant for Self Help Groups (SHGs).

According to allegations, the bank manager, Mohan Kumar, siphoned off loan amounts sanctioned in the name of various women-led SHGs, promising them financial assistance. Groups such as Ma Kali SHG, Jai Guru SHG, and Radharani SHG had each availed loans up to Rs 3 lakh. However, the members claim they were never issued passbooks, and later discovered that around Rs 6 lakh had been withdrawn in their name, of which only Rs 3 lakh was disbursed to them.

Upon learning about the alleged fraud, members of nearly 20–25 SHGs staged a protest outside the bank, locking its main gate. The agitation continued until bank officials intervened and assured them that a thorough investigation would be conducted and the matter resolved.

“We have taken a loan of Rs 3 lakh. Even after repaying it, we were told that there is another outstanding of Rs 3lakh. We were not provided with the loan book. This has put us in trouble,” alleged an SHG member.

Sources reveal that PNB has suspended the accused manager, Mohan Kumar, after internal findings suggested misappropriation of SHG loan funds. The newly appointed manager has also promised full cooperation and swift resolution.

“We have received the complaint. The matter is under investigation. The loan records are not matching,” said Rabi Kiswar, bank manager.
