A private hospital located near Krushak Bazaar in Cuttack has come under serious scrutiny after allegedly declaring a living patient dead on official records.
The shocking incident, which came to light recently, involves Chanchala Natiya, a resident of Cuttack’s Ranihat area, who was undergoing treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. While she was discharged on July 1, her condition deteriorated again on Friday.
When her family brought her back to the same hospital, she was reportedly turned away without any medical attention.
Hospital Entry Marks Living Patient As Dead
Later, when she was taken to another hospital, her family attempted to use the Ayushman Card again. To their shock, the portal showed that the patient had already been marked as deceased. The family then approached the Bidanasi police station and lodged a formal complaint, prompting the police to launch an investigation.
Sharing her frustration, a relative of the patient said, “After her health deteriorated suddenly again last night, I brought her to the hospital. Even after multiple requests, they did not check the Ayushman Card. Then I took her to another hospital and got her treated. But when they asked me for money, I gave the Ayushman Card details. They told me that the patient has been declared dead in the card, so I cannot avail of the card facility. I immediately went and filed a complaint at the Bidanasi Police Station and brought the police along with me to the previous hospital. Following this, the hospital people agreed that it was a mistake on their part and asked me to bring the patient to get treated there.”
Hospital Admits Mistake, Police Inquiry Underway
Following the complaint, tension prevailed at the hospital premises and later at the medical centre where the patient was taken. The hospital authorities have reportedly admitted to the error regarding the false death entry. The Bidanasi police have launched an investigation into the matter.
However, no formal statement has yet been issued either by the hospital management or by the police regarding the developments.
