In yet another incident highlighting the severe lack of road connectivity in tribal and forested regions of Kalahandi district, a pregnant woman from Sargipani village under Amapani Panchayat in Koksara block was carried on a cot through a forest path due to the inaccessibility of ambulance services.

As per reports, Hiramani Santa, wife of Jagara Santa, experienced labour pains in the remote village of Sargipani, which lies deep within the forest.

Due to the absence of a motorable road, local ASHA worker Urmila Thakur was informed, who in turn contacted the 102 ambulance service. However, as ambulances cannot reach the village, Hiramani had to be carried nearly three kilometers through the forest on a cot to reach the nearest road.

Tragically, before reaching the ambulance, she delivered a baby on the way. The mother and newborn were then taken by ambulance to the Koksara Community Health Centre.

While the newborn’s condition is reported to be stable, the mother’s condition is said to be critical.

This is not an isolated incident but part of a recurring problem faced by many residents of the inaccessible forest villages in this region. Despite repeated appeals for road infrastructure, little progress appears to have been made.
