The ‘Odisha Economic Survey 2024-25’ report, highlighting the State’s economic advances, has sparked debate and major political parties started taking the credit on Sunday.

Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Prasanna Acharya attributed Odisha's economic progress from 2019 to 2024 to the efforts of the previous government. The Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan highlighted that the incumbent government implemented several strategies to address inflation and bolster the State’s economy.

The Congress party has countered these claims by stating that if political entities vie for recognition over the economic development, they must also bear the responsibility for escalating cost of living.

“We (BJD-led government) have already given fast pace and the current government must make necessary provisions in the Budget to take the economy of Odisha to still higher levels. If they (ruling BJP) lose this opportunity to do so, there is a very high possibility that the State’s economy would go down,” Prasanna Acharya claimed.

Reacting to this, the Law Minister stated, “Inflation will come down and the rate of GSDP (Gross State Domestic Product) is likely to go up, as compared to the country’s GDP rate. Odisha government has also started making efforts, in a planned manner, to raise the per capita income (PCI of people in the State).”

“I am hopeful that we will be successful in our endeavours and a direct reflection of the State’s dream for a ‘Bikashita Odisha’ will be witnessed,” the Law Minister added.

“If BJD and BJP are competing with each other to take the credit for economic growth, then, who will take the credit of the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities?” Congress MLA Rama Chandra Kadam questioned.
