As the indefinite ‘Quit Steering Wheel’ protest by commercial drivers enters its third day, fuel crisis in Odisha has deepened, prompting police to step in.

In a significant development, fuel tankers are now being escorted by police in several parts of the state to ensure smooth supply of petrol and diesel.

Visuals have emerged from Soro in Balasore district, showing police escorting fuel tankers on National Highway-16 near Chaparpada.

This comes after reports that agitating drivers were blocking tankers and even allegedly manhandled some tanker drivers who refused to join the protest.

According to sources, in certain instances, protesting drivers tried to persuade tanker operators to halt their vehicles and participate in the strike. When they refused, some agitators reportedly fell at their feet and forcibly pressed their heads down in an attempt to shame or pressure them. In at least one case, a confrontation escalated into heated arguments and mild scuffles.

To prevent further disruption and ensure critical fuel supplies reach petrol pumps, police have deployed escort teams for tankers in sensitive areas.

With petrol and diesel supplies already drying up in many filling stations across the state, authorities are on high alert. If the deadlock continues, essential services, transport, and emergency operations could be severely impacted.

The drivers’ association continues to press for their 7-point charter of demands, including pension, insurance, and regularisation of services while talks with the state government remain inconclusive.
