Sanjeev Karali, a notorious criminal has been nabbed by Sambalpur police following an encounter on Saturday night. The exchange of fire took place near Rampela Chowk in the Rengali area. Karali suffered a bullet injury on his right leg during the gunfight and was subsequently arrested.
Karali had been on the police radar for the past month concerning a series of four major dacoity cases.
Acting on a tip-off, when the police attempted to apprehend him, Sanjeev opened fire on them. In retaliation, the police personnel shot him in his right leg.

“The accused was taken to Rengali primary health centre for initial treatment and later shifted to VIMSAR in Burla for treatment, where he is currently out of danger,” said Mukesh Bhamoo, Sambalpur SP.
Senior police officials informed that Karali has more than 23 cases registered against him at various police stations in several districts, including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sundargar on charges of fraud, theft, and dacoity.
Meanwhile, Himansu Lal, IGP (Northern Range), Odisha Police stated that the first priority of police was crime control, and any action required to ensure low crime rates will be taken.
“Strong action will be taken against anyone who commits heinous crimes,” he stated.
In a similar incident early this year, a dacoit was injured in a police encounter in Sambalpur and a 12-member gang was busted during a manhunt.

The gang was involved in a loot case reported from Jayantpur under Sadar police limits in Sambalpur. Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted raids at places near Kendghati. Seeing the police, the miscreants opened fire at the police team. In retaliation, policemen also opened fire. In the exchange of fire, one miscreant was injured.
