A 45-year-old patient sustained critical injuries after allegedly falling from the second floor of the medicine ward at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir. The patient has been identified as Purnachandra Sahu, a resident of Kharselpada.

According to sources, the patient was admitted to the hospital’s medicine ward on July 12. The incident occurred this morning when two iron plates installed for safety near the staircase reportedly broke, causing the patient to fall to the ground floor.

Safety Lapses Under Investigation

While the exact cause behind the fall remains unclear, hospital authorities confirmed that Sahu was rushed to the surgery ward in a critical condition, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

A preliminary inquiry has been launched under the supervision of the hospital superintendent, who stated that the incident is being taken seriously and all angles are under investigation.

Eyewitnesses and hospital staff noted that the accident occurred early in the day, and some suspect a structural failure in the railing or walkway.

Family Demands Accountability

The family of the injured patient has raised strong objections over what they describe as negligence and a lack of safety infrastructure within the hospital building.

Speaking to the media, Sahu’s elder brother demanded action against the hospital staff responsible for security and maintenance.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities have assured that the circumstances leading to the fall will be thoroughly probed, and appropriate action will be taken based on the inquiry findings.

“I am aware of the matter. We informed the Town police, and the exact cause and circumstances of the fall will be determined after their visit. The patient will receive all necessary treatment,” said Manasi Panda, Superintendent of Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital.
