Senior IAS officer Sujata Karthikeyan, wife of VK Pandian, on Wednesday, resumed duties a day after Mohan Majhi-led Odisha government rejected her leave extension application.
Sujata resumed her duties as the Special Secretary of Odisha Finance department, after a six-month sabbatical. Her return marks the end of an extended absence initiated on May 31. She had availed six months’ leave immediately after the debacle of BJD in the 2024 general elections.

Her return comes after the Odisha state government's decision not to approve her application for an additional leave of the same duration. The state's directive required Sujata Karthikeyan to immediately reassess her responsibilities.
Her initial leave began shortly after BJD suffered a humiliating defeat in the recently concluded Assembly election on May 31. This political context is particularly significant given the regional influence of the BJD in Odisha. Despite her efforts to secure an extended leave, her application was ultimately rejected, compelling her to swiftly re-engage with her responsibilities.
Sujata Karthikeyan is the spouse of B. Karthikeyan Pandian, who was a prominent figure in Odisha's political arena.
Sujata Karthikeyan's return comes at a critical juncture, with key financial decisions impending ahead of the fiscal year. Her leadership will be integral to navigating the state through economic considerations.
The narrative surrounding her leave and return encapsulates the intersection of personal and political dynamics within Indian administrative circles.
