The recent suicide of Bangalore-based engineer Atul Subhash came as a major concern owing to harassment faced by men allegedly due to biased laws. Amidst such a controversy, spiritual guru and prominent social activist, Baba Balia on Tuesday called for the establishment of a Men's Commission in India to address the increasing 'harassment of men'. He emphasised the necessity of instituting such a body to tackle these growing issues effectively.
Padma Shri Guru Baba Balia highlighted that men, often overlooked in discussions of social justice, are facing a myriad of challenges, including false allegations and unfair treatment. He stated, "With the rise in harassment cases, it is crucial to set up a Men's Commission to protect men's rights."
Focus on Elderly Care
Baba Balia also addressed the issue of neglect faced by elderly parents, underscoring the importance of establishing a Parental Commission to ensure their welfare. He expressed his readiness to approach the Supreme Court if necessary to push for this cause, aiming to bring attention to the overlooked needs of senior citizens.
“A family works like a democracy and there needs to be harmony among members. We welcome the Women’s Commission but there is now a need for Men’s Commission as well. We will discuss the matter and will soon approach the Supreme Court in this regard. Apart from this, there is also a need for Pitru-Matru Commission as well (Commission for elderly men and women),” said Baba Balia.
It has been learnt that a programme will be organised soon to discuss several issues concerning families, societal values and other aspects.
Baba Balia said that elderly parents are also being neglected by their sons and daughters. There have been several disturbing incidents which have been reported at regular intervals.
“All such things are happening because sons and daughters-in-law are harassing their elderly parents. The dowry torture cases are also increasing in society as there has been misuse of women's laws. Our aim is to create a balance in society as already there is a Commission for women and if a similar Commission for men is constituted various issues can be resolved. We also want that men and women and neglected parents to get justice within a stipulated time,” said Baba Balia.
While narrating an incident, Baba Balia said that a woman had approached him after she kicked her mother-in-law but was unable to sleep out of guilt. A son was recently arrested for hitting his mother, but the same mother forgave him.
“A Men’s Commission is the need of the hour along with a Commission for elderly parents. We have several lawyers, and intellectuals who will guide us in our efforts. All of them have assured us to help,” Baba Balia added.
