The Odisha government has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) to redevelop BDA City Centre (formerly known as Nicco Park) in Bhubaneswar into an ultramodern recreational facility. The announcement in this regard was made by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra during the Local Self-Governance Day celebrations on Sunday.

According to reports, the redevelopment will be executed in three phases, with an estimated investment of Rs 250 crore to Rs 300 crore. Planned facilities include modern lighting, beautification of the Bhubaneswar lake area, dedicated cycling tracks, an Ayurvedic park, food courts, and foot overbridges to improve public access.

Multi-Phase Development Plan

Reports added that the three-phase approach will ensure systematic upgrading of the site while minimising disruption to public use.

The initial works will focus on infrastructure and beautification, followed by the addition of wellness-oriented amenities and recreational spaces. The project is expected to establish Nicco Park as a central leisure hub for the city.

Linked Urban Projects

Notably, the Nicco Park redevelopment forms part of a wider urban improvement strategy in Bhubaneswar.

Earlier in June, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) announced plans to modernise a three-kilometre stretch of storm water channel 10, which includes the BDA City Centre and the adjoining Lake Zone near Janpath.

That project, estimated at Rs 200 crore, has already received state approval after a review by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, according to reports by The New Indian Express.

As per the BDA’s proposal, the City Centre area will undergo a comprehensive makeover featuring landscaped zones, herbal and Ayurvedic gardens, walkways, food courts, restaurants, and foot overbridges.

The project also includes restoration of the stormwater channel near Satya Nagar, with provision for a wastewater treatment plant and roadside gardens.
