The Odisha forest department, under its turtle protection and conservation programme, released as many as 971 Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings into the sea near Krushnaprasad in Puri district on Tuesday.

As per reports, a total of 996 Ridley turtle eggs were kept at different hatcheries at Baliana and Siandi in the first phase. Among those eggs, 971 eggs were hatched and subsequently, all the hatchlings were released into the sea in a safe and secure manner.

Several environmentalists and Olive Ridley turtle lovers in the area and across the State have expressed their pleasure over the development.

As per forest officials, 25 more eggs have been kept in a safe and secure manner at Baliana and Siandi. They are hopeful that, the hatchings of these eggs may get delayed a little bit due to late collection. Following the completion of the hatching, the rest turtles will also be released into the sea.

Many more eggs of Olive Ridley turtles have been kept at different hatcheries in the block. More hatchlings will be released into the sea in the next phases.

Notably, around five lakh Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings were released into the sea in Krushnaprasad last year.

“This year, more eggs have been collected and those hatchlings will be released into the sea in a safe and secure manner gradually in different phases,” said a forest official.
