The Orissa High Court will observe its annual summer vacation from May 19 to June 16, 2024, as per an official notification.
During this period, the court will suspend regular operations but establish special vacation benches to address urgent matters on eight designated dates. Accordingly, litigants and lawyers are advised to approach these benches only for time-sensitive cases.
Dates and Benches for Urgent Hearings
Vacation benches will convene on May 20, May 23, May 27, May 30, June 3, June 4, June 10, and June 13. The composition of judges for each date is as follows:
May 20 & 23: A two-judge bench of Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo and Justice MS Sahoo will preside alongside a single-judge bench led by Justice BP Satpathy.
May 27: A division bench of Justice KR Mahapatra and Justice MS Sahoo will hear cases. Single-judge benches of Justice V Narasingh, Justice BP Satpathy, and Justice SK Mishra will also operate.
May 30: The same division bench (Justice Mahapatra and Justice MS Sahoo) will be joined by single-judge benches of Justice BP Satpathy, Justice SK Mishra, and Justice AC Sahu.
June 3 & 4: A two-judge bench of Justice BP Satpathy and Justice MS Raman will handle urgent matters, with each judge also leading individual single-judge benches.
June 10 & 13: Justice Aditya Kumar Mahapatra and Justice MS Raman will form the division bench. On June 13, Justice Gourisankar Satpathy will also hold a single-judge bench.
Advisory for Litigants and Lawyers
The High Court emphasised that vacation benches are reserved exclusively for urgent cases requiring immediate judicial intervention.
Examples include matters related to bail, eviction, or temporary injunctions. Legal practitioners have been urged to avoid filing non-critical petitions during the break to ensure efficient use of court resources.
