Expressing concern over rising cybercrimes in the state, the Orissa High Court pulled up the state police Crime Branch and sought a report from its DG.
A single bench of Justice Chittaranjan Dash observed that Cyber Crime is spearheading in the State and a good deal of people gets affected by its menace. The bench was hearing a petition filed by one Suprabha Behera who lost a substantial amount to cyber fraud.
“The investigation in this area is very discouraging. No visible steps have been taken from the side of the cybercrime wing of the crime branch with regard to the investigation in most of the cases,” the bench said.
“The steps taken by the concerned police officials are neither adequate nor effective,” the court observed.
The court also directed the Directorate General of Police, Cyber Crime, Crime Branch to file an affidavit showing the details of cases registered under Cyber Crime in different police stations in the State and its progress in the investigation within 15 days.
As far as the present petition is concerned, the court directed the concerned investigating officer to file an affidavit showing the steps taken in the case so far and with regard to their apprehension of the culprits by the next date.
The next hearing in this matter has been scheduled for January 29.
